ALH -Systems has partnered with the University of Glasgow Racing Team (UGR) for Formula Student, Europe’s most established educational engineering competition. The competition aims to encourage more young people to pursue careers in engineering.
Formula Student is an annual competition run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers where student teams race small-scale formula-style cars judged on various criteria. The competition allows students to demonstrate their engineering knowledge and skills, test and improve their capabilities, and gain experience in teamwork, time management, project management, budgeting, and presentation.
The UGR team, a rising star in the Formula Student arena, made a remarkable debut in the EV power train class in 2023. Their electric vehicle, powered by innovative engineering solutions, secured an impressive 15th place out of approximately 65 competitors overall and a commendable 3rd place in the design event. This outstanding performance is a testament to the team’s dedication, ingenuity, and the quality of their partnerships, including their collaboration with ALH-Systems.
The UGR team, in their quest for innovation and performance, has integrated ALH-Systems’ epoxy resin into their project. Specifically, they used the NP1003 resin in testing towards the end of their car build last year. This resin, known for its flame-retardant properties and high gloss finish, is being considered for use in the fire-retardant firewall within the driver cockpit for the 2024 season. The team has conducted rigorous load and flame testing over the past few weeks, with promising results. The resin’s ability to withstand puncture tests, as demonstrated through various successful layup patterns and resin layers, has further validated its suitability for the UGR team’s project.
ALH Systems produces a two-part epoxy resin called NP1003 that UL 94 V-0 approves. This resin cures at room temperature and has a high-gloss finish. It is flame-retardant, thermally conductive, and slightly flexible to accommodate thermal changes. It is ideal for outdoor use and an excellent fit for the UGR 2024 Formula Student car.
ALH-Systems looks forward to hearing good things from this young, vibrant, forward-thinking, engineering-driven student team from Glasgow. Go UGR!
