As a leading UK manufacturer of high-performance epoxy resin systems, ALH Systems Ltd has strengthened its support for engineering education by donating its NP1003 General Purpose Epoxy Resin to the University of Strathclyde Motorsport (USM) team in Glasgow.
USM is a student-led engineering team that designs, builds, and races a fully electric single-seater car to compete in the prestigious Formula Student competition. The project brings together undergraduates from various engineering and technical disciplines and offers hands-on experience in high-pressure motorsport design and manufacturing.
Supporting the Next Generation of Engineers
Formula Student, organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), is one of Europe’s most respected educational engineering competitions. It challenges university teams to develop innovative electric race cars and provides a real-world platform for students to apply their academic knowledge.
ALH Systems’ latest support builds on a successful partnership with USM during the team’s previous car build, the USM24. This year, the NP1003 resin will again play a crucial role in the construction of the new USM25 electric race car, particularly in the manufacturing of essential high-voltage battery enclosures.
Fire-Retardant Epoxy Resin for Motorsport Applications
The NP1003 system is specifically engineered for fire resistance, electrical insulation, and mechanical durability—all essential for electric vehicle and motorsport environments. The resin meets the UL 94 V-0 flammability rating, exceeding Formula Student safety requirements and ensuring reliable performance in demanding conditions.
For this project, NP1003 is being used in the production of the accumulator (battery pack) and the High Voltage Disconnect (HVD) unit—critical components that require robust fire-retardant protection.
Advancing Sustainable Engineering and Electric Vehicle Innovation
By contributing advanced materials to university-led projects, ALH Systems continues to invest in the future of sustainable transport and technical innovation. The collaboration with USM highlights the real-world applications of ALH’s specialist resins in composite materials in real engineering scenarios.
“It is a privilege to support emerging talent in the UK motorsport and engineering sectors. Seeing our resin systems play a small part in a university project like USM25 aligns with our commitment to advancing safety and innovation across industries.”
