Last week, the spirit of collaboration and innovation was fully demonstrated in Aldershot, where ALH Systems’ Group Technical Manager, Mike Nilsen, led a specialist training session for SGN operatives. The focus of the session was the Internal Spray Trailer solution — a cutting-edge technology designed to tackle one of the gas industry’s persistent challenges: leaking metallic gas mains.
The Internal Spray Trailer marks a progressive investment by SGN, aimed at enhancing efficiency, safety, and sustainability across their network. Rather than depending solely on traditional excavation and repair methods, this system enables the internal sealing of joints using Flexspray resin — a durable material that creates a flexible lasting seal inside the pipe. This approach reduces disruption, minimises environmental impact, and prolongs the lifespan of existing assets.
Mike, who has spent 45 years in mainlaying and leakage control, started the day with a focused theoretical session. Participants were guided through the technical workings of the trailer, the application process, and the science behind Flexspray resin. His teaching style combined clear technical explanation with engaging, field-based storytelling — drawing from his own experience as a seasoned Mainlayer Craftsman. For the operatives in the room, this was more than just training from a specialist — it was insight from one of their own.
The session then moved outdoors for the practical, hands-on module, where SGN teams had the opportunity to operate the Internal Spray Trailer themselves. Under Mike’s supervision, participants practised preparing the system, managing resin application, and monitoring joint coverage in real time.
Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Many highlighted the value of having someone with Mike’s level of expertise walk them through both the “why” and the “how” of the system. His ability to translate complex engineering concepts into practical, relatable knowledge stood out as a key takeaway from the day.
“Mike’s session brought everything together — the theory, the practice, and the real-world application,” one participant shared. “You can tell he’s been there and done it. That makes all the difference.”
For Mike, the feeling was mutual. “It’s always rewarding to see that spark — when people not only understand how a system works, but also why it matters,” he said. “The Internal Spray Trailer is a great example of how innovation and experience can come together to make our industry safer, more efficient, and more sustainable. I’ve always valued, and never forgotten the excellent training British Gas gave me, which was invariably delivered by people with years of field experience behind them”
This event underscores ALH Systems’ ongoing commitment to knowledge sharing and technical excellence. Through targeted training and field demonstrations, the company continues to bridge the gap between product innovation and real-world application. By equipping operational teams with both understanding and confidence, ALH helps ensure that technologies like the Internal Spray Trailer deliver their full potential in the field.
As the gas industry continues to evolve — with a growing focus on network integrity, safety, and decarbonisation — the role of shared expertise becomes even more critical. Leaders like Mike Nilsen play a vital part in this process, ensuring that innovation doesn’t stay confined to the lab or design table but is brought to life where it matters most: in the hands of the people maintaining and improving our infrastructure.
